10 Photos To Inspire A Danube River Cruise

7
February 2017

As the second longest river in Europe and the waterway which flows through the most countries in the world, the Danube is a popular destination for European river cruises. Travelling through four different capital cities, on a journey from Germany to the Black Sea, there are many spectacular sights along the way and plenty of interesting places to explore. Here are some great photos to inspire a Danube River cruise of your own.

Regensburg

The starting point for many Danube River cruises, the city of Regensburg has one of the best preserved medieval centres in Europe. It has been classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and includes the Gothic cathedral.

Passau

Passau is situated at the confluence of three different rivers. It is home to St Stephen's Cathedral, which in turn holds the largest cathedral organ in the world.

Aggstein Castle

One of the many castle ruins standing on the banks of the Danube, Aggstein Castle was built during the 12th century and was known to resist any assault.

Vineyard At Spitz

The Wachau Valley is a well-known winegrowing region, producing crisp and refreshing Rieslings and Grüner Veltliners. This one in Spitz is one of many you will see in the area.

Durnstein

This picture shows Durnstein Abbey by the river's edge and the ruins of Durnstein Castle at the top of the hill. Legend says the latter was where Richard the Lionheart was once held captive by Leopold V.

Vienna at Night

The first of four capital cities along the Danube, Vienna is a beautiful stop. Full of charm and culture, there are royal palaces to discover and fascinating museums to explore.

Bratislava

Bratislava Castle stands proudly on the river bank as you sail through the Slovakia capital. The city is also home to a beautiful blue church and the quirky UFO Bridge.

Budapest

The city of eight bridges, Budapest is a popular city break destination and a fantastic port of call on any Danube River cruise. Join the locals at one of the many thermal baths or take a stroll in the city park.

Rock Face of Decebalus

Welcoming you to Romania is the imposing site of the Face of Decebalus, carved from stone into the side of the gorge. Decebalus was the last king of Dacia, an ancient land situated in modern day Romania.

Stalks In The Danube Delta

As you approach the Black Sea, you will sail into the Danube Delta, a preserved area of marshland and river islands. These white stalks are just some of the birdlife you will find here.
