As we are coming up to the start of Mediterranean cruise season, we thought we would take a look at some of the things you can do in one of the most beautiful ports in the region. You may have already spent quite a bit on various shore excursions during your cruise, so here are some great ideas for free things to do when you reach the Italian city of Napoli or, as us Brits refer to it, Naples.
For a quick and easy way to discover some of the local history, head to the Castel dell'Ovo - the Egg Castle. A legend states that a famous historical poet by the name of Virgil placed an egg beneath the castle's structure to support the foundations. He claimed that if this egg ever broke then the castle would fall into ruin and disaster would befall the city of Naples.
Whilst certain parts of the castle require an entry fee, the Ethno-Prehistory Museum is completely free. The exhibit focuses on man's relationship with the environment around the world throughout the ages but the castle itself, the oldest fortified structure in the city, will give you a taste of the Roman Empire. Incidentally, St Elmo (the other castle in the city) can also be viewed for free during the last hour of the day. This will give you even more of an insight into what Naples was like in days gone by.
If you are looking for somewhere to stretch your legs when you get off the ship, Park Virgiliano is perfect. You'll be free to wander the many terraces, soaking up the sun whilst looking out across the Bay of Naples towards Sorrento and Mount Vesuvius. It's great to discover such a relaxing spot in a busy city and you may find it difficult to tear yourself away from the spectacular scenery on offer in all directions.
Whatever time of year you visit Napoli, you can bring back a festive souvenir in the form of a cute, hand-made nativity scene from the city's Christmas Alley. Via San Gregorio Armeno is the official name of this quaint side street and it showcases some of the many craftsmen that are iconic in this part of Italy. Peer through the open doors to see artisanal products being made right before your eyes.
After some time wandering through the historical city centre, this is also a great place to grab a coffee or some lunch and rest your weary feet for a while.
