On 27th March 2020, the first virtual ceremony of a cruise line accepting official command of their ship took place. Celebrity Cruises took delivery of Celebrity Apex via a video conference with officials from Chantiers de l'Atlantique.
Here is everything you need to know about this unique occurrence.
Due to the current situation, Celebrity Cruises was not able to physically take delivery of Celebrity Apex, the latest addition to their fleet. The executives decided to organise the ceremony over a video call with officials at the Chantiers de l'Atlantique shipyard in France, where the ship was built.
During this video conference, executives accepted command of the ship, while traditions were carried out by Captain Dimitris Kafetzis. He ordered the exchange of the American and French flags, while both countries' national anthems were played.
Lisa Lutoff-Perlo, the president and CEO of Celebrity Cruises, explained that "Every delivery is unique just as every ship is unique. While the circumstances are unique right now, it's fitting that such an innovative ship would have a digital-age delivery."
She went on to say, “The day is every bit as meaningful because I know the dedication and commitment from the shipyard team, the onboard crew and our Celebrity shoreside team that went into bringing this ship to life. Celebrity Apex is a magnificent ship, and I am so proud to welcome her into our family."
Lutoff-Perlo also said she looks forward to welcoming guests aboard this beautiful addition to their already amazing fleet, when the waters are calmer and expressed great anticipation for her first sailing out of Barcelona, scheduled for 20th May 2020.
Finally, Laurent Castaing, General Manager of Chantiers de l'Atlantique shipyard, stated, “We had the honour of building the first Edge Series ship, Celebrity Edge, and so many wonderful ships throughout our partnership over the years. Celebrity Apex is exceptional, and we know she will be well-received and enjoyed for many years to come.”
Celebrity Apex is the second ship out of five in the Edge Class and, much like her sister ship Celebrity Edge, she will showcase unique restaurants such as the Magic Carpet, Le Petit Chef and Raw On 5. She will feature three new and exciting stage shows, an expanded wellness program and a new bar, Craft Social, which offers 50 different types of beer, wine on tap, tasty cocktails and quick snacks.
For children, S.T.E.M. classes will be available so they can learn about coding by the non-profit organisation, Girls Who Code, who have partnered with the cruise line. The CEO of Girls Who Code, Reshma Saujani, is the ship's Godmother.
Celebrity Apex completed her sea trials in February, but her naming ceremony, scheduled for 30th March, has been delayed due to the current health concerns. Her christening ceremony in Florida has also been postponed until later in the year, after her season of UK sailings from Southampton was cancelled.
