Mainz Christmas Market

The picturesque capital of Rhineland-Palatinate is steeped in history but at the same time has a fabulous cosmopolitan outlook. The Mainz Christmas Markets provide visitors with a unique atmosphere and a charming experience leaving them captivated and mesmerised by the numerous Baroque buildings, palaces and impressive cathedrals in the heart of the Old Town that are blazed with lights.

Set beneath the shadow of St. Martin Cathedral, showmen and musicians mesmerise audiences with their festive celebrations and yuletide cheer. The Mainz Christmas market offers an array of festive stalls, with many hand-crafted toys, carvings, ceramics, candles and much more on sale.

Wander through the beautiful St. Nicholas Market and take in the mouth-watering scent of gingerbread, roasted almonds, mulled wine and other yuletide specialities in the air.

A highlight of a stroll through this market is the vivid hand carved nativity scene which stands in front of the Romanesque St Gotthard's chapel. Life sized and carved from lime wood, these figures are not only a unique sight in Europe, but incredibly impressive to children and adults alike. As well as these typically festive figures, historical figures representing the city of Mainz can also be found, represented on the enormous Christmas pyramid in the centre of Höfchen square.

Located across the river and opposite Mainz, the city of Wiesbaden provides an equally unique experience. This bustling city comes alive during the Christmas period and is a centre of historical importance with its protected buildings and gothic architecture. Wiesbaden city breaks provide the perfect way to experience the wonders of these remarkable cities.
