Located on the banks of the river Aller, the beautiful timber-framed houses and mix of quaint history and stunning natural areas, make Celle the epitome of a German fairy tale town. You will find Celle along the German Timber-Frame Road, so it will be no surprise to see so many examples of this style of building.
The historic Old Town lies at the very heart of Celle and is home to the town church and Old Town Hall as well as an abundance of half-timbered houses spanning several centuries. Among these historic highlights are the synagogue, the oldest largely preserved half-timbered synagogue in Lower Saxony, and the Hoppener Haus.
Aside from its many historical sights, Celle is also the gateway to the expansive Luneburg Heath, a nature reserve featuring many different habitats for birds such as woodpeckers and grouse. Nature lovers will also enjoy the captivating French Garden. Now a listed park, the French Garden is a sprawling baroque courtyard and leisure garden first open in the 1600s. Here you can wander the avenue of lime trees, English rose garden, lawns, copses and water fountains.
Celle is located just 43km from bustling Hanover, and many visitors also opt for a city breaks here, which offer a truly diverse range of attractions, festivals and places of interest.
Built as a residence for the House of Brunswick-Luneburg, this palace displays Baroque and Renaissance features and includes the oldest Baroque theatre in Europe.
This monastery has housed a convent since the 13th century and is adorned with treasures such as intricate tapestries and historic murals.
Considered to be the most famous building in the town, the Hoppener House is a magnificent half-timbered house dating all the way back to 1532. The façade of this six-storey building is adorned with rich ornamentation including gods of the planets, mythical creatures, faces and reptiles and various portraits of Celle’s noblemen.
This modern restaurant is located in the very heart of Celle, just a short walk from the historic Old Town. Dine in the cosy interior, or out on the leafy terrace during the summer months and choose from a menu of international delicacies with fresh ingredients.
Set in a beautiful half-timbered house right in the centre of Celle’s Old Town, Le Feu is a hidden gem offering a wide variety of Flammkuchens (thin pizzas) and desserts.
