Cochem is without a doubt one of the most picturesque towns on the river Mosel. A town of legends, it is surrounded by steep vineyards whose product is sold locally in the many taverns. The town seems to be timeless with its many traditional buildings and winding streets and it is dominated by Cochem Castle, offering great views of the river.
The steep, up-hill walk to see Cochem Castle is well worth the effort. It was built around the year 1000, destroyed in 1689 and rebuilt between 1874 and 1877.
After being destroyed in 1689, during the nine-year war, this castle was never restored and remains in ruins to this day.
From the top of Pinnerkreuz Mountian, you may enjoy the very best view of the castle, the Mosel-valley and its surroundings. You can take several hiking paths or spend some time in the restaurant with a perfect view of the castle. The chairlift is operated between Easter and mid-November.
This locally themed restaurant is said to date from the 14th century.
Hotel Germania, on the Mosel promenade in the centre of Cochem, sells traditional local fare at cheaper than average prices.
Labrochette sells eclectic international cuisine including Brochettes (kebabs), other grilled meat, and fish with tasty sauces available.
