Some of the most popular spots in Porto are located around the Ribeira neighbourhood. Here you will see the World Heritage Site, the São Francisco church, which has a magnificent golden interior and should not be missed by anyone visiting the city. The Stock Exchange Palace nearby is also worth a visit; you can see the most impressive Arab room in the country. There are 6 bridges connecting Porto to Gaia over the Douro river, many of them providing an excellent view of the river.

Cais De Gaia's Port Wine Cellars

There are around 15 of these dotted around the Gaia area. Most of the world's supply of Port is stored and aged here. A visit to any of the warehouses should not be missed.

Serralves Museum

This is a pink Art Deco construction located in the surrounding formal gardens, which are magnificent in their own right. It is devoted to culture and particularly fine arts with constantly changing exhibitions.

Porto has some of the best restaurants in Portugal, offering a variety of different menus that gives the visitor the choice of regional and international cuisine with plenty of seafood. However, most of the restaurants in Porto boast an array of gastronomic Portuguese specialities. These include rich tripe stews called tripas, which are known to have been a firm favourite with locals for around 600 years. Porto is home to port wine of course, so there are many wineries around the city where port wine is brewed. Often served with cheese and nibbles.

The main shopping area in Porto is located along the Rua de Cedofeita and the Rua Santa Catarina, at the corner of Rua Fernandes Tomar. Some streets seem to specialise in particular goods. For example, the Rua da Fabrica is known for its bookstores, whilst the Rue Galeria da Paris is the best place to pick up some fine art in Porto.

Other shopping centres worth visiting include the Centro Comercial Peninsular and the Centro Comercial Cidade de Porto, on Rua do Bom Successo.

Porto offers a good range of nightlife and entertainment options. These include its two casinos and plenty of cafés, bars and clubs to suit most tastes. Dance clubs always start very, very late, around 1-2am, and close around 6-7:30am. Nightlife is mostly concentrated around the Ribeira area.
