Mozart House

Visit Mozart's birthplace and the residential home of his family. The Mozart family lived on the third floor of the 'Hagenauer House' on Getreidegasse for 26 years, from 1747 to 1773 and the celebrated composer was born here on 27 January 1756. The integrated museum now hosts precious relics such as the violin Mozart used to play as a child, as well as portraits, letters and other memorabilia of the Mozart family.‍

Fortress Hohensalzburg

The massive fortress built on Festungsberg Mountain crowns the city of Salzburg. To get there, you can hike up one of the paths or take the funicular from Festungsgasse. The Fortress Museum is distinguished mainly by its collection of medieval art.

Mirabell Castle & Gardens

This palace and its gardens were originally built as a luxurious private residence in the style of the Tuileries in Paris. Today, the palace is the official residence of the mayor of Salzburg.

Hellbrunn Palace, Park & Fountains

A popular spot for outings from Salzburg, this palace dates from the early 17th century and was built as a hunting lodge and summer residence. The palace gardens, one of the oldest baroque formal gardens in Europe, are known for their trick fountains.

Enjoy an early morning start with breakfast at the Café Bazar to take in the views of Salzburg while it's quiet. Then, embark on the fantastic 'Sound of Music' tour - in 2015, it was 50 years since the film set in the mountains of Austria was released. The tour will last four hours and offers some amazing views as you would expect. On your return to Salzburg, have a coffee and cake in Café Tomaselli, before heading up to Hohensalzburg Fortress. This is central Europe's largest preserved fortress and can be reached by a cable car that offers stunning views of the city.

Heading down again, be sure to visit the birthplace of Salzburg's most famous resident, Mozart, where you can view portraits and instruments on display. Visit the Museum of Modern Art in Mönschberg featuring graphics by many modern artists including Klimt and Schiele. For dinner, head to the 'Jovial Monkey' (zum Fideln Affe) which serves traditional food in a vibrant atmosphere.

Goldener Hirsch

This renovated inn, established in 1407, is one of the most sought after venues in Salzburg. The cuisine and wine list are excellent and the restaurant is staffed with a superb team of chefs and waiters.
Stiftskeller St. Peter

Dine at the oldest restaurant in Europe while listening to the music of Mozart. Enjoy a delicious three-course candlelit dinner, prepared as it would have been in the 17th and 18th centuries while local opera singers and musicians perform some of Mozart's finest work. Aside from a collection of baroque banquet rooms, there is an inner courtyard with vaults cut from the living rock, a handful of dignified wood-paneled rooms, and a brick-vaulted cellar with a tile floor and rustic chandeliers. In addition to wine from the abbey's own vineyards, the tavern serves good, home-style Austrian cooking.
Café Tomaselli

This renowned café opens onto one of the most charming cobblestone squares of Salzburg's Old Town. Choose from 40 different kinds of homemade cakes and a wide range of drinks.

A variety of shops can be found in the narrow alleyways of Salzburg's Old Town. Here, you will find everything from international brands to small exclusive boutiques. Many traditional shops are located near Getreidegasse, the location for numerous bakeries, wineries, confectioners and tailors.‍

Salzburger Heimatwerk

Located in a dignified stone building, this is one of the best places in town to buy local Austrian handicrafts and original traditional costumes.‍

Schatz Konditorei

An excellent pastry shop in the centre of the Old Town. The store's speciality is the highly acclaimed 'Mozart Kugeln', a delicious praline made of pistachio, marzipan, and hazelnut nougat dipped in chocolate.

Getreidegasse

The Getreidegasse is Salzburg's most famous shopping street, and also where Mozart's birthplace is located.‍

Salzburger Christkindlmarkt

In the 15th century, in front of the Salzburg Domplatz, a simple bric-a-brac market started. This now has over 1 million visitors per year, making it one of the most famous Christmas markets in Austria. A starry sky gives this market its distinctive, romantic appearance. You can find traditional arts and crafts, decorative items, festive Christmas ornaments and toys that are hard to find anywhere else. Of course, the trip won't be complete without sampling one of the many Salzburg delicacies and pastries.

The annual cultural events, which reach their peak at the Salzburg Festival, overshadow the club scene and beer halls. It's said that there is a musical event, often a Mozart concert, staged virtually every night in Salzburg. Free concerts are frequently presented by students in the Mozarteum (Schwarzstrasse 26) and in summer, free brass-band concerts are performed in the Mirabell Gardens.

Salzburger Schlosskonzerte, Mirabell Castle

The Salzburger Schlosskonzerte (Palace Concerts) often present the best ensembles. The carefully crafted performances combine with the beautiful, historic venue to create the perfect atmosphere. Unchanged since the days of Mozart, concerts are staged in the richly decorated baroque chambers.‍
