Another spectacular highlight is the Baroque Residenz Palace, a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1982. In addition to the former Prince Bishop's Residence, there are many sights worth seeing in the Old Town such as the Cathedral, St. Mary´s Chapel, the market place and the old bridge over the River Main. The city offers numerous museums, theatres and attractive festival highlights.

St Kilian's Cathedral

The cathedral is a masterpiece of German architecture. Dating from the 11th century, it was built as the seat of the Bishop of Würzburg. A recent renovation gave the interior a bright and airy feel and mixes modern with traditional.

Residenz Palace

Würzburg's prime attraction is one of the most important castles in Europe. It boasts numerous lavishly decorated rooms and a magnificent staircase with the largest ceiling fresco in the world.

Käppele Pilgrimage Church

This Baroque church is definitely a must see during your Wurzburg city break. As you approach this site of pilgrimage, you will pass 14 Stations of the Cross which are marked with sculptures depicting the journey Christ took before his crucifixion. Once you climb the 350 steps, you will be greeted by amazing frescos, the pietà (sculpture of Mary cradling Jesus’s body) that is said to performed miracle cures and great views of the Marienberg Fortress.

Juliusspital Winery

This is the second largest wine estate in Germany and is run by the not-for-profit Juliusspital Foundation. There are more than 400 acres of vineyards in total, which produce more than a million bottles wine every year. Guests have the chance to taste some of the vintages (predominantly Silvaner and Riesling), buy some to take home or dine in the stylish restaurant.

Market Square with Chapel of St Mary

The market square features a daily market where you can buy some local goods, as well as the city’s oldest church – the Marienkirche. This Gothic building was dedicated to the Virgin Mary and houses 20 grave plates that depict bishops buried here from 1372-1779.

The Old Bridge

The Old Bridge is also a sight not to be missed. Lined with statues of saints, it is the oldest bridge still standing over the Main River.

Marienberg Fortress

Marienberg Fortress is a short walk away and constructed in the 13th century. It was originally a Celtic building but was reconstructed in a baroque style. Inside the fortress is the Mainfrankisches Museum which exhibits jewellery and models of the city.

Botanical Garden

The Botanical Garden is attached to the University of Wurzburg. There are more than 9,000 different species of flowers to enjoy, some of which are in greenhouses and some in the open air.

A trip to Würzburg is not complete without a chance to explore the shopping districts, known to be the best in the Franconia region. Most shopping is focussed around the two pedestrian precincts of Schönbornstrasse and Domstrasse where there are large department stores offering a variety of goods. They include designer brands, furniture and toys, however, these products are all sold at relatively high prices, as the area is renowned or its upscale clientele.

For a cheaper alternative, Juliuspromenade Street has many shops. Although many of these are designer, they are more reasonably priced. As well as this, there are many more alternative shops offering unique items.

Many wine shops can be found in Würzburg, and offer the perfect souvenir to take home to loved ones. The Haus des Frankenweins is one of the best shops to buy Franconian wine and also hosts tastings for tourists.

Würzburg has a vibrant scene which comes alive at night. From theatres and operas to jazz music and alternative punk, this city has something for everyone. Centred around the local wine cellars known as Weinstuben, much of the nightlife is traditional.

For those looking to listen to music, Omnibus, the oldest jazz bar in the city, is a great spot. The club is in the cellar and live jazz plays throughout the week. Standard also hosts live music, but of a different genre and is well known for its inexpensive drinks and meals.

A night at the theatre is a very pleasurable way to spend the evening. The Chambinzky has open-air performances in the summer. For those who prefer opera, Würzburg is host to the annual Mozart festival. The well renowned and 200-year-old Mainfrankentheater hosts performances of opera, ballet and plays.

Café Cairo is the home of the alternative, frequented by a wide variety of people who enjoy the punk scene. The acts are alternative and there are also occasional movie screenings.
