Dunkirk will forever be intrinsically linked to WWII, thanks to the heroic actions by allied forces to evacuate over 300,000 men from the area. Obviously, you can see the memorials and tributes situated around the town, but it’s worth looking past this historic event to see what else you can find. Unfortunately, the results of the war mean there isn’t much architecture to admire, but there is an interesting maritime museum featuring local hero Jean Bart, the fine art-focused Musée des Beaux-Arts and a lengthy seaside promenade with a plethora of restaurants to choose from.
In 2020, Lille celebrated its status as World Design Capital, leading to a number of fantastic events to highlight the endless creativity of the people here.
There doesn’t need to be a year-long event to showcase the architecture, art and distinctly French style of the city streets, though.
These can be enjoyed whenever you choose to visit and are a key facet of Lille’s charm. And, if all that isn’t enough, eat your way along Rue des Bouchers for a real culinary treat.
