This swollen section of the River Rhine goes by many names: Lake Constance, the Swabian Sea, Bodensee. It acts as an intersection for Germany, Switzerland and Austria, allowing visitors to experience life in all three countries and explore the charming towns dotted along the shoreline. The diversity on offer stretches to the landscapes too, presenting a range of activities that includes hiking, wildlife watching, wine tasting and lounging on beaches.
Konstanz is the largest city and an ideal place from which to start. Don’t miss smaller places such as Meersburg and Lindau, though, which offer lakeside life at a slower pace. Although many choose to arrive in the summer, when high temperatures invite swimming in the warm water, Bodensee offers changing scenery all year round. Spring brings fruit sellers to the roadsides and sees the flower island (Mainau) in full bloom, Christmas markets and twinkling lights decorate the region in winter, and wine-lovers flock in autumn to sample the results of the harvest.
