There are quite a few German cities with a claim to being the country’s medieval capital, but Wiesbaden is the undisputed king of Neo-Classical design. At the forefront of this architectural smorgasbord is the former spa building, which is now part casino and part gourmet restaurant. It highlights another of the city’s main draws – the chance to relax amongst natural hot springs that have been flowing for centuries.
Other reasons to visit include sampling a glass or two of wine produced in the neighbouring Rheingau region during the Rheingau Wine Festival every August. The vineyards are just a taster (literally) of Wiesbaden’s natural elements, which continue in the form of picturesque parks and palace gardens on the banks of the Rhine.
