In one sense of the word, Berlin is always cool. Its trendy neighbourhoods, lively nightlife and extensive programme of summer events make it perfect for a short break abroad. And when temperatures rise during the summer months, the many green spaces and outdoor events make it even more appealing. But, in order to be cool in the other sense of the word, you might want to try some of these activities.
Bisected by the beautiful River Spree, Berlin offers plenty of opportunities to get out on the water and feel the cool breeze in your hair. One of the best ways the locals like to do this is by renting a canoe. There are various places you can do this, including Der Kanutourist and Kanuliebe, and you can choose to explore on your own or follow the lead of a knowledgeable guide. If you're on holiday with you partner, discover the romantic Island of Youth, where art is celebrated in all its forms.
As well as the river, swimming and water activities take place on some of the lakes throughout the city during the summer months. The largest and most popular of these is Mgglesee, in the south-east of Berlin. There are safe swimming areas dotted along the shore of the lake, including shallower areas for children and secluded spots for adventurous nudists. There's also a floating restaurant/log cabin called the SpreeArche.
When the sun comes out, locals and visitors love to visit some of the riverside beaches that can be found along the banks of the Spree. These well-designed and trendy areas offer sand to plant your feet in, deck chairs in which to relax, and bars and clubs from which you can grab a cold, refreshing drink. Most, like Holzmarkt and Rummelsburg, stay close to the river but there are some which make inventive use of other spaces. For example, Deck5 can be found on the top floor of a multi-storey car park.
The Badeschiff (literally bathing ship) is a swimming pool on a barge that is floating in the River Spree. This unique area, attached to Arena Berlin, becomes a hive of activity in the summer, as people meet for a swim or to relax in the deck chairs surrounding the water and soak up the views of the Berlin skyline. There are also Yoga classes, paddleboard sessions and beach parties to help create those summer vibes.
What better way to cool off in the heat than with a delicious ice cream? And Berlin is one of the best cities in Europe for variety and invention when it comes to everyone's favourite frozen treat. Rosa Canina has three different locations around the city and can offer interesting flavours such as Moscow Mule, apple sauce and pumpkin cream. But, if you're in a rush to cool down, head to Woop Woop Ice Cream where your chosen flavours are mixed before your eyes in 30 seconds flat, using liquid Nitrogen.
Whatever the weather, you are sure to enjoy any Berlin city break. But these activities will allow you to cool off if the heat gets too much. Call us to book your trip today.
