Dusseldorf is a city of old and modern and definitely worth a visit whatever the season. Walk along the Konigsalle, lined with boutique shops or take in a meal at the Rheinturm where you have amazing views over Dusseldorf.
Visit Dusseldorf during the Christmas Markets and you will not be disappointed. There is an abundance of magical wooden huts selling local crafts, sweets, biscuits and roasted nuts.
Take a trip to the Christmas market on Marktplatz and ride on the restored Merry go round which is nearly 100 years old. Sample the Gluhwein or Egg punch or take a traditional meal in one of the many beer houses, all brewing their own beer.
Cologne has to have one of the best Christmas markets in Germany. Visit the Christmas market in front of the stunning cathedral for a truly festive feel.
Take in the Angels Christmas market on the Neumarkt which is the city's oldest Christmas market or see the Harbour Christmas market next to the chocolate museum, with around 70 stalls selling crafts, fine foods and of course Gluhwein.
The old Christmas market on the Alter Markt in front of the town hall is a must for families. See the Heinzelmannchen (house gnomes) who, legend have it, performed different jobs for the local people of Cologne.

Whilst in Cologne take a short train ride (approx 40 mins) to Konigswinter and ride the cog railway to the Drachenfals. The market is set against the beautiful castle, at night it is a wash with colour offering a very festive feel. Time for one more Gluhwein!
