European Historic Thermal Towns

Ahhhhhhhh… is there anything more relaxing than a day at the spa? How about an entire holiday spent bathing beneath curative waters in one of 40 destinations around Europe?

That’s exactly what the European Historic Thermal Towns Association can provide, highlighting a number of towns, cities and regions that sit on top of ancient hot springs that have been offering a therapeutic soak to locals and visitors for hundreds of years. From well-known places such as Budapest to yet-to-be-discovered gems like Pamukkale in Turkey, these thermal waters can rejuvenate the body and mind, leaving you ready to explore the surrounding area.

And, if you can’t get enough of the healing H2O, the European Route of Historic Thermal Towns allows you to link two or more destinations together for a truly tranquil tour.

Acqui Terme

The remains of a Roman aqueduct in the area show the historical importance of water to this region, and so it’s unsurprising that Acqui Terme, found in Piedmont, is a popular thermal spa resort today. There are three different mineral springs found in the city.

Bad Homburg

People have been arriving to bathe in the water at Bad Homburg for more than 200 years. Today, there are no less than seven different spas being supplied by eight mineral springs that bubble up from below the streets. The largest complex can be found at Kur-Royal Day Spa.

Baden-Baden

Baden-Baden is an exclusive spa town in the foothills of the Black Forest and is famous for its thermal baths and elaborate casino.

Bagnoles de l'Orne

This charming town nestled within the Normandie-Maine Natural Regional Park is built around a picturesque lake and on the site of a legendary spring.

Bursa

As the former capital of the Ottoman Empire, Bursa is a city full of historical wonders. Striking mosques tower over the cobbled streets and mausoleums dedicated to past sultans show the intrinsic link to the past in this part of Turkey.

Caldas da Rainha

Known as the Garden of Portugal, Caldas da Rainha is in the popular Estremadura region, in the middle of the Atlantic Coast, where a hospital was established to take full advantage of the thermal springs.

Caldes de Montbui

Caldes de Montbui is a town situated in the valleys near the Caldes River, only 30km from Barcelona. The source in the main square reaches temperatures of around 70°C.

Chaves-Verín is made up of two different towns that come together to form a Eurocity spanning the border between Spain and Portugal.

Chianciano Terme

Nestled beautifully within the hills of the Tuscany, the mineral springs in the area of Chianciano Terme were the foundation for a historic settlement.

Châtel - Guyon

Before the thermal springs underneath the village of Châtel – Guyon was discovered, the area was known as a winegrowing destination.

Clermont Auvergne Métropole

The Clermont Auvergne Métropole is a metropolis centred on the city of Clermont-Ferrand in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, central France.

Daruvar

Originally known as Aqua Balissae (a name which translates to mean ‘very hot springs’), Daruvar’s relationship with thermal water dates back over 2,000 years.

Enghien-Les-Bains

Enghien-Les-Bains is located 13.5km from central Paris and is famous for its spa resort, Spark that was developed in the 19th century, near the Enghien Lake.

Galaalti

Galaalti is located within a region that’s full of mineral-rich waters, oil and mud volcanoes. This hotel was built at the bottom of the Greater Caucasus Mountains, near the Caspian Sea and the capital city of Azerbaijan, Baku.

Galicia Region

Galicia is an autonomous community, with an Atlantic coastline, situated in the north-west of Spain. Galicia is the number one thermal bathing location in Spain and is home to more than 300 hot springs, some used by the Romans.

Imereti Region

The Imereti Region is located along the Rioni River, in the western part of Georgia, and covers many spa towns.

Karlovy Vary Region

The Karlovy Vary Region is world famous for its spas. Around 26 different resorts have made the area a popular tourist destination since the 19th century - the most famous landmark is the Pramen Vřídlo geyser.

Krinides - Kavala

Krinides-Kavala is situated in the north of Greece and is best known for its therapeutic muds and being the home of the first Christian church in Europe.

La Bourboule

La Bourboule is a mid-mountain spa town, located in the Auvergne region of central France, with the Dordogne River running through its town centre.

Le Mont Dore

Le Mont-Dore is a commune located in the Massif Central, on the bank of the Dordogne River, central France. This town has 12 thermal springs that are rich in Sodium Bicarbonate and iron and are used for both drinking and bathing.

Loutra Pozar

In the western part of the municipality Almopia, sits Loutra Pozar, a picturesque village that’s famous for its hot springs and thermal waters that are said to help with the nervous system, dermatological issues and rheumatism.

Loutraki

The Greek seaside resort of Loutraki is found on the Gulf of Corinth, in Corinthia, and is best known for its natural springs and therapeutic spas.

Luchon

A commune in France, Bagnères-de-Luchon is famous for its Vaporarium, a natural steam room that acts as Europe’s only underground hammam.

Mondariz - Balneario

Mondariz-Balneario is a spa town in the province of Pontevedra, Galicia, in the north-west of Spain. This thermal region offers tourists the chance to relax in therapeutic waters and discover the area’s rich heritage.

Montecatini Terme

Situated within Tuscany, Montecatini Terme is one of the largest spa towns in Italy. It’s widely known for its thermal bath, where you can experience treatments such as massages, mud baths and other types of beauty treatments.

Montegrotto Terme

Montegrotto Terme is a thermal resort in the north-east of Italy. Roman remains have been discovered in this town and provide the opportunity for tourists to visit the archaeological site as part of a guided tour.

Ourense

Ourense is a city based in the northwest of Spain and is well-known for its thermal waters that are collectively called As Burgas.

Ourense Province

Ourense province is located in the south of Galicia, in the north-west of Spain, an area surrounded by mountains and filled with hot springs.

Pamukkale

Pamukkale is a town located in the west of Turkey and is known for its mineral-rich thermal waters. The Pamukkale thermal spas are Turkey’s most visited attraction.

Route des Villes d’Eaux du Massif Central

The Massif Central is a volcanic, mountainous area where vast amounts of thermal waters are produced and nearby towns have developed around the hot springs in order to draw tourists in.

Royat – Chamaliéres

The Royatonic spa resort is located in between Royat and Chamalières, in the Massif Central Mountains. It’s known for its Baroque style architecture, brightly coloured hotels and water pavilions.

Salsomaggiore Terme

Salsomaggiore Terme is located in the north of Italy, at the foot of the Apennines. It’s a popular spa town due to its saline and sodium infused mineral waters which, whilst being particularly salty, provide a therapeutic experience.

Spa

Spa is a town in the East of Belgium and is actually where the term ‘spa’ originates from. The name has become a generic term for other similar areas due to the hot springs being so popular.

São Pedro do Sul

São Pedro do Sul, in Portugal, is most famous for its thermal spas . This natural spring was discovered around the time of the Romans and has encouraged tourists to visit the area for around 2,000 years.

Vichy

Vichy is located in the centre of France and is known for being a spa and resort town. This is a mountainous area that experienced volcanic activity 150,000 years ago, which is the cause of the thermal springs in Vichy.

Wiesbaden

Wiesbaden is a city in the west of Germany and is one of theoldest spa towns situated in Europe, famous for its thermal springs and spa.
